Superb PAIR of French antique Empire /Directoire bronze sconces with matching shades. These are circa late 19th century & designed and cast by an exceptional French bronze artisan - Henri Vian- they are initialled and numbered on the reverse. (HV C20B) They are a high end casting with fine detail and weight , they are large very grand sconces -48cms in height!

Outstanding quality -

Central bronze drape around a cast medallion at the top- double tassels at the end of each drape. -twisted rope arms - with eagle head tops and beading around the edge of each bobèche and bulb cup.

The double candle lamps are set at the same level- Elegant ,timeless & also a fine investment.

Henry Vian (1860–1905) is a bronzier and ironworker, active towards the end of the 19th century, he drew his inspiration mainly from the most beautiful models of the 17th century made a lot of interior decorations with chimney mantelpieces, ormolu and patinated-mounted vases, chandeliers,… He produced articles of the highest quality.
His studio was located at 5 rue de Thorigny, 3rd arrondissement, Paris, at the Hôtel Salé, the current Musée national Picasso-Paris.
Henri Vian participated in the Universal Exhibitions of 1878, 1889 and 1900
He was a gold medalist in 1889.
He is also the grandfather of Boris Vian (French writer, poet, musician etc.)

The four shades that we are including with these sconces - are of a later/modern date - but are of high quality with metal ribbed style edging at the top and lower edge.- colour parchment/pale gold

Condition - Good antique condition - The finish is good, but there is rub as would be expected - we like this and feel it adds to the patina and appearance . They are both strong and completely without damage.
