USS Frigate Constitution Bookends Gorham Hugo Carlborg. Gorham Solid Bronze Bookends, USS Frigate Constitution signed Hugo Carborg, SC. Circa 1925.
This is a Rare to find Gorham bronze bookends of the United States Frigate Constitution, Old Ironsides, circa 1925-1927. They have been referred to as the most desirable set of nautical bookends ever made. Case in solid bronze by the Gorham manufacturing company in Providence, Rhode Island, USA, signed Hugo OE Carlborg. (Hugo 1892-1962). They are a spectacular example of the (lost wax casting process) these bookends represent the apex of American sculptural craftsmanship. Each bookend as pictured condition. They appear to have original patina.
Height 5 7/8 inch X Length across side to side 4 7/8 inch X Base width front to back across 2 1/8 inch. Very heavy. Each weigh 2 pounds 14 ounces.
NOTE: Hugo O.E. Carlborg was active/lived in Rhode Island, Minnesota. Hugo Carlborg is known for sculpture, teaching, crafts. Hugo O.E. Carlborg (Oct. 11, 1892- Feb. 11, 1962) was a sculptor and craftsperson who worked as a bronze sculptor for Gorham Manufacturing Company in Providence, Rhode Island. He studied at Rhode Island School of Design (Class of 1915) under Albert Atkins and also with Henry Hunt Clark. He taught classes in jewelry and silversmithing and jewelry and fabricated design from 1924-44 and 1945-51 at RISD. He was a member of the Providence Art Club. The Gorham Manufacturing Company is one of the largest American manufacturers of sterling and silverplate and a foundry for bronze sculpture. Gorham Silver was founded in Providence, Rhode Island, 1831 by Jabez Gorham, a master craftsman, in partnership with Henry L. Webster.
