Please check out my store for other collectibles and unique items. Please click the link immediately below.TheCaliforniaPickers StoreI have added a video how porcelainsigns are made becauseI have been asked a few time why the top portion and the bottom portion of the sign appear to be different shades of black if they are from the same sign. Please note that the signhas the CA Highway serial number on both the top and bottom of the sign. Picture 9 shows the matching California Division of Highway identification numbers that are the same. This is baked into the sign and not a surface stamp. A sign expert told me that the differentshades of black are becausethey were probably baked at different times and that the enamel paint easily could have been shaded differently during the manufacturing process. In the video you can see the worker adding color to his mix in an inpercise manner. It is my belief that this is the reason they appearto be slightly differentshades of black. Also that the heating oven/ kiln would not of been big enough for this sign to be fired at the same time so length of heat could also of been a factor.
I will personally deliver this sign anywhere in the 7 western states after payment clearanceor a prepaid deposit of $1000. Other arrangementscan be made for shipping if necessarybut I assume this will be a California piece. I would prefer payment to be made at time of delivery and after your inspection of the sign. That is why the payment required at check out is not active. Pay when you inspect the sign.
For sale is an amazing one of a kind Porcelain 50's era PCH California Pacific Coast Highway Hwy. 1 Sign California Division of Highways. It is 52" tall and 68" wide. This sign was erected in 1958 at the junction of Highway 101 and Highway 1 Leggett, Ca. and alerted the southboundtraffic to the junction entrance to the most amazing and iconic highways in the USA. This is happens to also be the end or beginning of Highway 1 PCH, depending on your direction of travel. This junctions is the northernmostportion of highway 1 PCH so this junction is not just any junction. It also appears to have been a target for many projectiles thrown from moving vehicles and I think a few bullets over the years. Imagine what this sign as seen. This area is also smack dab in the middle of the emerald triangle. This sign is a centerpieceto any collection and would look amazing in any location. The last picture is what the intersection looks like today taken from google maps and the horrible little sign that is in the place instead of the my amazing sign.
This area is famous for its historicRedwood Logging and in 1964 this sign was being replaced when my friend came on the sign replacement team in his loggingtruck. Having passed this sign for years he inquired of the road crew on scene what was going to happen to this sign. He was told that the sign was tobe discarded. He asked for the sign and after some negotiationshe was giventhe sign. It has hung since then between two old trees in his truck yard. I convinced him to sell me the sign recently and now it is looking for another home.
It is a two pieceheavy sign and to prevent any damage I affixed it to a plywood frame with nylon bolts. It was cleaned with soap and water only.
