THE BOOK OF THE FARM. Detailing the Labors of the Farmer, Farm-Steward, Plowman, Shepherd, Hedger, Cattle-Man, Shepherd, Field-Worker and Dairymaid. In Two Volumes. By Henry Stephens. Published in 1852 by Alden, Beardsley & Co., Auburn. 9” x 6” blind-stamped leather binding with spine title and decoration in gilt. Illustrated with 450 illustrations, including a series of full-page engraved plates and hundreds of wood engravings throughout the text. Volume I = 569 pages. Volume II = 462 pages, plus appendices.

Condition: GOOD ANTIQUE CONDITION. Professionally rebacked featuring new leather spine with original spine decoration laid over, original leather boards cleaned and polished. Hinges repaired, binding reinforced to last for many, many years. No torn, loose or missing pages. Moderate foxing, some staining from handling. This was a working book, used by a FARMER, not some prissy lord or lady wearing white gloves. Years of daily consultation have left their mark on the pages but I am sure there are buyers out there who value authenticity in their acquisitions and who will be happy to add this rare 163-year-old volume to their own collection.

Description:

This is an 1852 two-volumes-in-one edition of Henry Stephens’ BOOK OF THE FARM, one of the most thorough and respected works about farm life ever published in the 19th century. Surviving copies are extremely rare today.

Do you remember the BBC television series, “Victorian Farm?” It ran in 2009 and was immensely popular. The premise of the show was to challenge ordinary people to live as Victorian farmers, equipped with nothing but the very clothes, tools, etc. that would have been available in the Victorian era. This work – THE BOOK OF THE FARM – was furnished to the cast members as a guide to the different aspects of 19th-century farming. THE BOOK OF THE FARM was featured on-screen several times during the show’s run.

At the time, surviving copies were already quite rare, but after THE BOOK OF THE FARM was featured on \"Victorian Farm,\" the last copies all but vanished from the market, snapped up by collectors. When I found this copy last year, I immediately scheduled it for restoration. Now some lucky buyer can add it to their own collection with complete confidence that it will last for generations to come.

THE BOOK OF THE FARM addresses every aspect of traditional farming, from crops to husbandry, to buildings and equipment. (I have provided a full summary of the Contents below).

This handsome work is illustrated with steel-engraved plates and literally hundreds of smaller woodcut engravings throughout the text.
