MAGNIFICENT ANTIQUE JAPANESEEDO PERIOD HAND WARMER

Rare, early Ko-Seto ware, 1600s - 1700s

ExquisiteJapaneseSeto Potteryhand warmer.Stunning, sculptural form with a strong, yet gentlepresence. Hand sculpted te-aburi (shuro / hibachi) of Seto-yaki stoneware glazed in deep, rich brown with traces of white rice straw ash glaze upon the shoulder and hip. Dating to the 1600s to 1700s,this superb hibachi is a rare example from the bygone era of the Shogun and Samurai.

Of the finest quality pottery, it would have been utilized in a wealthy household to welcome guests. When they arrived, the te-aburi would have been set before them with ash and hot coals inside radiating warmth. The smooth, handsome contours are most tactilely pleasing and invite one to warm the hands upon the surface. In the summer, these hibachi were occasionally used for incense to add fragrance to the room or placed below the kimono rack to perfume the cloth.

The detail work on this piece is quite sublime with linear fur-like striations combed into the surface of the stoneware under the glaze.Fashioned with great care by the Japanese craftsman to create the undulating contours, gentle expression, and solid, strongcountenance. Thehand warmeris quite heavy and solid, with a magnificent patina from centuries of appreciation. The surface is a deep translucent brown, and when held at just the correct angle in the light displays a blue iridescence indicative of great age. It is in excellent antique condition with just minor wear commensurate with age, original firing lines, and three spur marks on the underside. We note that one horn appears to have a lacquer finish, possibly indicating a very old restoration. We find thisappealing as it adds so much wabi character. See photos. Absolutely stunning early Japanese pottery. If onlythis tasteful hibachicould tell of all the conversations and gatherings it has quietly witnessed.

Measures approximately 12.5\" long and 5.5\" high. Bold andartistic from every angle with serene presence. Must be seen and experienced in person to fully appreciate the feel of this piece. A rare and skillfully crafted early masterwork, and an exquisite centerpiece for the discriminating collector of Japanese antiques.
