Up for your consideration is this excellent late 19th century antique Native American buckskin/buffalo hide beaded doll. This doll is extremely similar to Plains and Sioux Dolls. We see this 12.5 inch tall doll is entirely made of hide which is both sinew and thread sewn. We see beaded moccasins, decorative aspects on the legs, waist, chest, neckline and eyes. We see some minor bead loss on the left foot (see photo 7) and on the waist line (see photo 9). We see strong threads with no other weak areas. Overall the hide of this doll is not brittle to the touch but is fairly stiff. We see some red on the backsides of the legs which appears to be set into the hide (see photos 2 & 9). We have inspected the underside along the dress and sleeves and see the same oxidation and heavier dust build in comparison to the exterior areas. The patina and wear on this doll could only be from years of use and exposure to air. The beads, more noticeably on the feet, do have irregularity. Very slight pitting on some beads can be see under a loop, this is a common trait of true antique trade beads. Overall this rare piece of Native American art is in great condition.
