Here is a very scarce saber bayonet for the Civil War U.S. Navy Model 1863 Spencer Repeating .52 caliber rifle. Brass hilt, 28.75\" overall with a straight 24\" blade. Maker marked to ricasso \"S & K\" with naval anchor and inspector initials on reverse ricasso and the center ofthe ironcross guard above ricasso. Bayonet is in excellent condition with original crosspolishstill strongly visible. No scabbard present. Only 1,000 of these rifles were ordered by the Navy Dept. and no doubt saw service aboard sailing vessels and ironclads in the hands of sailors and USMC / Marines. These bayonets marked this way are very hard to find.

Ames is believed to have had production problems which caused a delay, especially during the initial stages of the Mexican War (1846-48). The sabers were noted in official records as purchased for \'for arming and equipping the militia,\' and they were delivered by S&K on February 9, 1848. The saber contract was the last given to S&K by the Ordnance Department. During the Civil War (1861-1865), S&K made bayonets, swords, and other ordnance for the US and the Confederate States of America though purchased by independent agents.
