Antique Lakota Sioux Plains Indian Pipe Tomahawk Crucifix Cutout Hand Forged:
$1140.00

Hello and thanks for looking at my sale. This is a classic example of a Lakota Sioux pipe tomahawk from the mid 1800\'s. The blade was hammer forged by a blacksmith and the cutout completed during the forging process. The head was made specifically for use in the Fur Trade of North America. Across the plains in towns and some travelling blacksmiths would forge pipe tomahawk heads and put a suitable haft on it. Sometimes the Indian would travel into a town to have this service completed and sometimes they would haft or handle their own tomahawk heads but these hafts are generally much more crude and primitive. The presentation pipe tomahawks were always made by the white man and presented to the Indian. This tomahawk is a larger size and would have been an impressive weapon carried by an Indian warrior or chief. A classic style from a bygone era.
The tomahawk is in excellent condition with no repairs or damage. Ash haft is original to the head. The haft is ash wood and does have some superficial and shallow cracks that originate from the years of changing humidity and the wood drying out, natural stress and drying cracks. The haft is very strong and sturdy, no chance of anything coming loose. The old brass tacks are square shanks and from the correct period. A few areas of hot file marks are still seen. VERY NICE patina all over, really shows its age! The \"crucifix cutout\" style head is a very desirable style and shows the influence of Christianity spreading throughout the Sioux Indian tribes. The haft is 24\" and the head is 9\". The tomahawk found its way to my family through a purchase at a 1964 estate sale in Billings Montana by my uncle and his business partner. Please ask any questions you may have. I guarantee this tomahawk to be authentic. Money back if appraised and is not as I have described it. Thank you so much for looking!
