Thisinteresting piece was used fortaking the pulse and would have been on a nurse\'s chatelaine. Wristwatches were not common until later in the century. Insidethe metal casing is a tiny \"hour\" glass that measures exactly 1/2minute.The top unscrews to allowthecaseto be taken apart (perhaps to replace a broken glass).

Openingson the side allow it to beseen without removing, however. Thereis a ring on the top so it can beattached to the chatelaine.Thecondition is excellent with no dents or dings and it measures 3 1/4\"long (not counting the ring). The hourglassis in perfect condition.One isshown on p. 223 of Genevieve Cummins\' and Nerylla Taunton\'s book Chatelaines,Utility to GloriousExtravagance. They also writeabout them on p. 230.
