AUSTIN COX CHESS SET ALCOA 1962:
$1350.00

A strikingly beautiful, modernist chess set designed by Austin Cox of Austin Enterprises for ALCOA (Aluminum Association of America) in 1962. These mesmerising sets were produced as gifts for ALCOA\'s top customers. They feature 32 pieces displayed in a walnut case, enclosed by the original blue plexiglass cover that slides out, allowing access to the set. The pieces were cut from aluminum bars; the white appearing in a natural aluminum finish, with the black differentiated by black anodized sides with regular aluminum faces. All pieces bear a stamp on their undersides: 1962 Austin Enterprises. These sets are the talk of chess players and collectors, but are also marvelous as simple, sleek ornaments and perfect examples of refined design. The case is 31\" long x 2 1/2\" high and 6\" deep and can be hung on the wall as a work of art. The case has been repaired. Board is 19 1/2\" square. It is very rare to see a set with the original board. The tallest piece is 4.75 inches and the smallest are 3.75 inches. The plexiglass cover has some slight scratches. The pieces show normal wear for a set this age. There is a pawn with a scratch on it. It is shown on the picture of the bottom of the board. The board has some blemishes that are marked in the pictures with pawns. So please look closely. Happy offerding. Whether you are buying to play or as an art piece it will definitely bring a nice touch to your home.
