The first French bassoon I played on for a number of years was a Cundy-Bettoney. This is the sixth Cundy-Bettoney that I have restored and sold. The serial number of this one is 9012. It, as the others, probably dates from the 1920s or 1930s. It is made of maple and has a lined wing joint and a lined small side of the boot. Included is the original bocal and case. Th e Cundy-Bettoney factory was in Boston where they made large numbers of student grade instruments including French and German system bassoons, flutes, clarinet and saxophones. The pattern for their French bassoons was the Buffet bassoon of Abdon Laus who was the first bassoonist of the Boston Symphony ( all the bassoonist of the Boston Symphone played French bassoons at that time. Laus also had played the famous bassoon in the premiere of the Rite of Spring in Paris. Fred Bettoney the second bassoon in the Boston was the son of Harry Bettoney one of the owners of the Cundy-Bettony Company. The instrument for sale is in very good condition, good pads and finish. Bettoney bassoons play with a small mellow sound They probably were tuned to A-435 but can be played at A-440.Some lownotes are flat but can be lipped up The original bocal ( the brace on the bocal is not a add on but was to make the bocal more durable with students and military use ) is good but I would recommend that the purchaser of the bassoon obtain a Buffet number one bocal which plays the extreme high notes with ease and is just generally better. I am including three reeds that play well. Paypal only, shipping $45 in the upper 48 and around $100 world wide.
