Rare Civil War M1840 Marine Corps NCO Sword From Collins & Co
Purchased from an old North Carolina estate I have for your consideration a M1840 NCO sword. This piece is in as found condition and being offered on the open market for the first time. It is maker’s marked from Collins & Co. of Hartford Connecticut and dated below that. The maker’s mark has the classic arched Collins & Co. name over Hartford Conn, and it is dated below that. It lacks any U.S. Government property marks or inspector initials, which is correct for Collins & Co. swords. They were contracted by the U.S. Government but never property marked or inspected.
This sword also distinctly features one clamshell turned up on the side of the maker’s mark, it\'s is hard to say when this happened and why but I would assume it was done in the period.
Collins & Co. produced a very limited number of NCO swords, only 648. The quality of Collins and Co. edge weapons is second to none, having owned several bayonets and swords by them I can attest to their ability to withstand aging and brutal conditions, making them ideal for collectors.
This NCO sword has a handsome mustard patina on the handle, an undeniable sign of true age. The blade has a chocolate patina and appears to have been forgotten in an attic for some years. There is some visible separation where the blade meets the handle, nothing structural, purely cosmetic. It is expected for a sword of this age, sans scabbard to have some patina. Please make sure to look at the pictures above to get an more accurate idea of the condition. It is in good condition, complete, and would make a great addition to any collection due to its rarity alone.
Please check my other sales for other historical items. I\'ll be adding Civil War period firearm parts, bayonets and swords on a regular basis, as I have quite a few to sell so check back often! Froo | Froo Cross Sell, Free Cross Sell, Cross promote, Marketing, listing Apps, Apps, Application
