Cora Wahnetah Qualla Cherokee Native American North Carolina Indian Art Pottery

I just purchased this vintage North Carolina Cherokee art pottery piece from a local estate here in Central Virginia. The handled bowl was done by Cora Wahnetah (Wahyahneetah) who learned traditional hand-coiled and modeled pottery from her mother, Ella Long Arch. She was a presence in the beginnings both of the Oconaluftee Indian Village, where she demonstrated pottery techniques, and the Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual Cooperative, where she sold her highly regarded designs. This handled ash bowl has a striking figural design showing a coiled snake rising out of the center with the mouth closed over the back rim. The pit fired clay shows rich color with matt black shading to a rich taupe. The piece measures 3 ½" high, 4 ¼" long and 4 ¼" wide. The base is hand incised "CORA WAHNETAH." The bowl is in excellent condition with the only issue being a pinpoint nick on the edge at the mouth and a ½ shallow pinhead flake (looks like a rough line) on the black rim edge. This handsome figural ash bowl would make a nice addition to any collection of vintage Qualla / NC Cherokee art pottery or SouthEastern Native American folk art.International buyers, please contact meprior to offerdingto discuss shipping options. policies require sellers to provide tracking information which is offered on USPS Priority Mail International and Exprss Mail International. Recently, the shipping times for USPS ParcelSelect have been significantly over their estimates. Ifyou are concerned about turn around time, please choose the Priority Mail option.
