The Katsinas are the spirit messengers of the universe, representing all things in the natural world as well as the Hopi ancestors. After death a Hopi continues spiritual existence as a life sustaining Katsina. When Katsinas appears as rain clouds, they bring prayers for nourishment for the earth, & a long life for all mankind.
Katsina dolls:
The cultural & religious belief is that the Katsinas bring the Katsina dolls in their likeness as a gift for the young girls. Each gift represents a prayer wish for good health, growth, and fertility. With this daily reminder in their home, young girls remember the Katsinas & their teachings.
The doll stands approx. 10\" tall including base and 3\" wide. Base is approx. 1-1/2\" tall. Carved from cottonwood root. It is in excellent condition. The name of the artist & in some cases other information is on the bottom of the base. No chips, breaks or losses. Sold as is gently used in displayed only condition.This is one of the finest carvingsever created by theartist. The detail is stunning! A true one of a kind piece!
