Heathkit SB-1000 1 KW ham HF linear amplifier 160 - 10 meters has upgrades NR:
$697.97

--This very efficient 1 KW amp consistently receives high marks and reviews. It is the only amp Heath ever made with 160 meters. It is the only Heathkit design still in production (by Ameritron-- the AL 80B). This example is late production (1989--see photos 6 and 7) and incorporates the improved multi-winding plate coil. This amp is an exact clone of the former Ameritron AL-80A, and was apparently sold by Heath in kit form under license from the original designer at Ameritron.
--This is a solid performer, providing 800-1,000 watts output with 100 watts drive on all bands except 10 meters, where 600 watts is the norm. It has an RF parts Chinese manufacture 3-500Z which performs very well. This is probably a replacement tube. Pictures 2 and 3 depict full power operation on 160 with about about 900 watts out. For longevity purposes, you should generally operate with less drive, esp on CW.
--When I got this amp, it had vaporized contact fingers on the 160 meter band switch wafer. This is a very common problem with these units and is addressed in many articles and forums. The problem is generally attributed to either VHF parasitic oscillations or uncontrolled corona discharge emanating from the 160 meter doorknob cap connection on the front band switch wafer. I installed the recommended corona-suppressing brass washer ordered from Ameritron on the switch and replaced the 160 meter band switch wafer with a new Centralab unit provided by Ameritron also. Cost for parts alone was over $110.00, because Ameritron only sells the entire switch, not individual wafers. In addition, I replaced the anemic 6KV plate blocking capacitors with new 7.5 KV versions. Lastly, the stock plate cap parasitic suppressor was replaced with the suggested nichrome hairpin loop and MOF resistorcombination. These changes are visible in several of the photos. I will include the remaining parts of the new band switch as well as the old parasitic suppressor with the amp. See the last photo.
-- I have only used this a few times, as it was in my \"backup\" stable, which I am now liquidating. There is no \"soft key\" mod present, however I have had no issues with keying currents using my rather delicate ICOM IC-7000 exciter.
--Also included will be the original manual with schematic and a spiral bound working copy-visible in last photo. There are markings and builder annotations on both manuals. I do not have the separate illustration booklet which originally came with this as a kit.
--A few scratches here and there, as well as my homebrew 10 polyester film meter panel label (easily removable with no marks). The most serious cosmetic issue is the original builder\'s drilling of the cabinet to permit safe access to the six input network coils while the amp is operating. These disfiguring holes are visible in photos 9 and 10. I peaked these coils for the \"standard\" ham bands, although this amp is advertised to work with WARC bands. Some retuning of the input networks is requiredto accomplish this as well as partial deformation of the tank coil. Included with the amplifier will be a properly sized alignmenttool. The manuals detail all of these procedures.--Some reasonable caveats: This unit contains instantly lethal voltages. You MUST have the necessary training to deal with this. This is a \"vintage\" amp and you should be familiar with maintenance and safe operation of same. These amps, while quite rugged, are very intolerant of careless tune-ups. Please take it easy and pay careful attention to the tuning instructions in the manuals. This unit was built in 1990 and is over 25 years old. You will have to carefully and correctly install the delicate tube and plate cap. You will have to remove and replace the cover to do this. You may have to re-peak the input networks after shipping and to interface with your exciter. You must be a licensed amateur radio operator to buy and operate this. Please provide me your call sign at the time of payment.
--This amp is wired for 220 VAC single phase and should ONLY be operated from that voltage. You must have an adequate, dedicated circuit for it to function properly. If you choose to operate on 110 VAC (NOT recommended!) you will have to change the AC plug and rewire the power supply in accordance with the manual instructions.
--I probably don\'t have to mention that proper shipping of this will be somewhat costly. Properly double boxed with all new packing materials and twonew nesting UPS commercial boxes (Cost >$30.00) it weighs just over 60 pounds. Also, the 3-500Z must be shipped separately. The amp itself, sans tube, iscarefully double boxed in accordance with the guidelines set out by King Conversions on the internet and will be shipped UPS ground. I only ask that you pay the UPS calculator shipping amount to your address-no packing, material or handling charges. If shipping is less when I purchase the UPS label (Sometimes there are wild variations!), I will refund the difference promptly. The amp cannot be shipped to a PO Box!
--Since does not provide a workable methodology for separate billing for shipping the tube, I am adding a $15.00 \"handling\" fee (however there are no handling charges) to cover a portion of the postage for that separate shipment, which will be by priority mail large flat rate box.--As previously stated,I have already expended time and resources to properly package this for shipment, so no local pickup please.
This is too large and delicate for overseas shipment. Accordingly, I will ONLY ship to US stateside street addresses.
