* Milton Howard, master kachina carver, was born on Feb. 8, 1964 in Tuba City, Arizona on the Navajo-Hopi reservation. His father, also a kachina carver, is from the Third Mesa area and his mother is from the Rocky Ridge area. He is married and has three children. He took up carving as a young boy, learning from other members of his family, but he was not serious about it until he was living in Albuquerque, in his early twenties, going to school to be an electrician and carving with his cousins, Jerry and Dan Bert, in his free time. He sold his dolls to his classmates, carving kachinas for orders only. At about 30 years of age he made the decision to start carving full time. Master Hopi carver Milton Howard is world renown for his carving skills and many collectors snap up his creations when available. His works of art are found in some of the finest art galleries around the world. ** The Kachina doll is given in hopes of abundance and health as well as for education. The Hopis were the original carvers, using a single piece of cottonwood root. The Navajo began carving in their own creative way, adding feathers, fur and leather to their creations. There are over 350 Kachina dolls, each with its own attributes. *
