Over the years, we have sold several of these Icom R7000 receivers. The R7000 receiver is a consumer model, but sure feels like mil-spec equipment as it is built like a tank using plenty of metal and generous use of high end components. Icom designed this receiver to mate with it\'s R*71A receiver which covers the low bands. Theoretically if you had both receivers, you would have DC to daylight reception. Since this unit offers reception above 25 MHz, that is what we will focus on.

Overall condition of the unit is good for these R7000\'s and with this is a used receiver, you will see some signs of prior ownership. The front panel looks just great, but you\'ll notice a variety of marks on the covers. Please look at my pictures and feel free to magnify to see the details up close.

The receiver has been tested, works well with excellent sensitivity,no known issues, and is ready to provide you with many hours of enjoyment.

Included with this saleis the original box (worn), the power cord,a copy of the user manual, a copy of the extensive service manual, and copies of a brochure and various advertisements. Also included isa CD with the manuals and mods which you can perform to improve performance.

This receiver is capable of receiving virtual all the communications that exist between 25 MHz and 1999 MHz and is unblocked so can pick up the full 800 MHz spectrum. It does not receive between 999 MHz and 1025 MHz, but I personally do not know of any transmissions located in this swath of frequencies. As such, this receiver is comprehensive and can receive analog signals such as:

  • aircraft and ground control
  • fire
  • police and other emergency personnel
  • security (campus, hotel, stadium, auditorium, etc)
  • wireless microphones
  • railroads
  • road crews
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Service weather broadcasts
  • FM commercial radio
  • all Ham radio bands above 25 MHz
  • TV audio channels 1 thru 69
  • CB radio
  • air to ground telephone
  • marine radio broadcasts
  • US Coast Guard
  • MRS (General Mobile Radio Service)
  • FRS or family handheld units
  • military emergency guard and strategic air command
  • search and rescue
  • helicopters and unicom
  • business frequencies
  • drive thru fast food
  • Border Patrol
  • news media
  • US Customs
  • ATF frequencies
  • FBI
  • We have not picked up satellite or NASA transmissions, but if you live in the vicinity and have the right antenna, this is another possibility for reception. Here is another R7000 being demonstrated on Youtube showing many of the various signals that a receiver such as this may pick up:

I have a handheld Icom IC*R1 that I purchased some years ago. It does not have the range as the IC-R7000, but with that I have picked up Lifeflight helicopters, Rockview State Prison chatter, Lock Haven University\'s Maintanence Dept., Penn State University\'s football stadium security, and even Air Force 1 in addition to all the typical communications. That\'s right, a few years ago, when Bill Clinton was in office, AF1 landed at Centre Community Airport on open channel. Just before AF1 landed, all the bands went dead as everyone went silent for security reasons. Ground communications with the Secret Service were encrypted so I could not receive them. But soon after landing, the channels were all alive once again. That was on a tiny handheld unit that did not have the sophistication of this R7000 receiver. This Icom IC-R7000 can receive so many broadcasts that you will sit for hours and listen in to a world that you never knew existed in radio reception.

I have sat in my office chair and played with the receiver and gone from a NOAA weather broadcast on 162.400 in State College, PA, to TV channel 10 In Altoona at 197.750 to the local State College Ham 2 meter on 146.850. During snowstorms, I dial in the Penndot (Penna Dept. Of Transportation) road crews on 47.300 chatting about road clearing during the storm. A few minutes into my playing recently, the local fire whistle went off so I tuned into 154.070 to get information on the fire dept call out. I then punched in the frequencies for the local PBS station at 91.5 Mhz to get the news.

The IC-R7000 is not only a receiver, but a scanner with 100 memory channels. You can spin the dial to get a frequency, direct dial with the keyboard, or access via memory. Since you can scan, you can locate unknown transmissions or enter known frequencies that you want to monitor by setting band parameters and scanning for signals. There is a priority channel that will come alive if you are listening elsewhere when a signal is trasmitted, scan speed and delay knobs, a noise blanker to reduce motor generated static, an attenuator to reduce receiving signal strength, a dimmer to set the dial light for the available light conditions, a large and clear flourescent display, a signal meter that measures either center signal or signal strength, an adjustment for setting the tuning dial friction to user preference, as-well-as many other typical scanner and receiver features. This receiver can also pick up lower and upper side band transmissions.

Since this receiver was a popular one for Icom, many past users have played with their R7000\'s to tweak it\'s features. There are modifications online (Mods) to increase scan speed, double the number of memory channels to 200 and many more, if you like to experiment to improve. These Mods are free and are on the included CD, but there are more Mods available for this unit that I do not have on my disc. This unit has not been touched so it is open for Mods, if desired.

I have tried to give a fairly complete overview of this IC-R7000. Of course, I am happy to answer any questions, if you have any. Users will need to supply an antenna which can be purchased from here on .A discone antenna will provide the very best wideband reception.
