IMPORTANTJAPANESECARVED WOODSTATUE DEPICTING EARLY WESTERN INFLUENCE

Muromachi / Momoyama Period, 1500s

Rare and historically importantstatue. An early depiction of the influence of the first westerners who visited Japan. Of great cultural significance, the statue depicts the religious andglobal history of the times, wearing the robes of a Buddhist monk as well as the ruffled collar of the Portuguese Jesuit Christians. We believe it is of Otomo Sorin, the Daimyo (feudal lord) of the Otomo Clan who was one of the first Christian converts when the Portuguese arrived in Japan. His face is serious, yet serene, expressing simultaneously his responsibilityand meditative peacefulness. The statue is of joined block (Yosegi Zukuri) technique with several pieces of timbercoming together to form the figure. Exhibits a magnificent, well worn patina with traces of gesso and black pigment. We note that the hands are missing, lost to time. Absolutely spectacular piece with minute expressive details and superb craftsmanship. The artisan has carefully depicted the smallest details, from the folds of his silken robes, tothe wrinkles in his brow, to the Portuguese collar at his neckline. See photos for all of thesublime details.

Thisexquisite, museum qualitystatue measures approximately 10\" high and 10 1/2\" wide.A rare treasure of Japanese historical significance. The type of cultural object usually reserved for museums and guidebooks. Would make anoutstanding centerpiece for the discriminating connoisseur ofworld class Japanese antiques.

Sōrin Ōtomo was the twenty-first head of the Ōtomo clan. His intelligence and superior diplomacy helped fortify his family\'s position to be one of the richest clans in Kyushu. He is known to have defended his lands from the Ryuzoji, Shimazu, and the Moriclans throughout the Warring States period. While he is best known under his Buddhist name (Sōrin), hewas said to have favored his Christian (Kirishitian) name, Don Francisco. St. Francis Xavier first met Otomo Sorin during his passage from Kagoshima to Yamaguchi in the fall of 1551. This first meeting was just after Otomo Sorin had inherited the leadership of his Daimyo due to the death of his father. Otomo Sorin was just 22 years of age at the time. On the occassion of this first meeting St. Francis was traveling on his way to Kyoto to meet with the Emperor of Japan.
