SISIUTL: The Sisiutlis known among Northwest Indian Tribes as a sea serpent, also known as seawolf, wasgo, haietlik, and other names. The biscuit style discoidal in thissale is of North American Northwest Coastorigin, also documented similar specimen attributed to the Eskimo, Alaska Bearing Sea Culture, (op. cit.) .

The lower carving on the discoidal depicts aNative American Indian attempting to harpoon or spear a large sea creatureknown to the Tlingit, Haida andKwakwaka’wakw tribes as “Sisiutl”, which was a dramatic supernatural creatureoften depicted as the double headed sea serpent in the highest ranking crestsin the Kwagiulth culture. It is described as a snake – spirit of the water inthe Pacific coast region of North America –which guarded the homes of the supernatural. The power it possesses allows it to shift shape and transform from animal to manat anytime. According native lore, a Sisiutl can change itself in to a self-propelledcanoe which the owner must feed with Seals.Touching the serpent, or even looking at it can cause death. Shamans would try to kill the Sisiutl for itshealing power and magic – and also becauseit was closely associated with war, strength, death and revival. Warriors wouldkill it to rub its blood on themselves to attain its skillful strength andbecome invulnerable. A warrior would often wear a head band or belt in theimage of a Sisiutl to provide protection from harm. It was painted on the sidesof canoes and hung over doorways to protect the inhabitants from evil spirits. The early Pacific Northwest tribes areabsolutely convinced of its existence, as are the Inuits (another similar species of sea serpents). The Sisiutl has been depicted as a totemanimal of several tribes, an honor shared only by the Thunderbird. Nativerepresentations of the creature depict an oblong serpentine animal with smallforelimbs, fins, pointed teeth and a doglike or crocodilian head. The ancient Kwakiutl Tribe (Northwest British ColumbiaCoast, north of Bella Coola) describes catching such a beast by using splitcedar traps which snap shut once the Sisiutl goes for the live bait, breakingits back but still able to cause serious damage to the hunters and their canoes.

AGE: not carbon dated, but probably not earlierthan 12,000 years ago (the canoe was thought to have been in use/ invented bythe Northwest Coast tribes at about that time). Giventhe archaic carved figures, the presence of the canoe and the Sisiutl, our own estimate of age of very late Paleo Era.
