The stoneware firm of Johann Peter Thewalt of Horr wasfounded in 1852 and continued in business until 1930, producing beer steins asone of their products. This particular stein would have been manufactured in 1894. In 1892 when exportpieces had to be marked with their country of origin. The TP mark shown on the base was the mark of the firm. Herr Thewaltwas a manufacturer of both art and common stoneware. He died on September 21, 1887. After his death, hisson Karl carried on the factory under his father's name. Johann Peter Thewalthad at least one other son, Albert Jacob Thewalt. Albert and Karl werecompetitors, Karl having taken over their father's business, while Albertstarted his own. And that Albert Jacob Thewalt was the grandfather of presentday Albert Jacob Thewalt, owner, operator and manager of the extremelyfine and productive firm of stein makers carrying that name today.
