Museum Piece Demonstrating the Process of Creating 1800\'s SatsumaWare

Important Japaneseceramic vase of the finest Satsuma quality. We have never seen an unfinished Meiji era piece that has survived in our many years specializing in Japanese antiques. There are few, if any exist at all, of thissuperb quality. Exquisite, intricate detail and masterdrawing skill, with lively expression and minute brushwork. In the 1800\'s, producing a piece of fine Satsuma ware was a time consuming process involving at least four firings and great talent. First the pot was hand thrown, and after air drying was fired for the first time. Second, the minute figures were hand painted in outline form with tiny brushstrokes. Iron red was also sometimes applied at this stage under areasthat would haveheavy raised gilding. Then the piece was fired again. Third, the artist appliedpolychrome enamelsto color the design, after which another firing took place. Lastly, the piece was gilded, then fired one last time. The most respected master artists represented only a handful of individuals and studios: Yabu Meizan, Ryozan, Kozan, and Kinkozan, to name the most prominent. This rare piece, upon close examination and comparison with works held by the world\'s top museums and private collections, is most certainly by one of these four. We believe Yabu Meizan or Ryozan. The character, interaction, and lifelike movement of the numerous figures, along with the masterful details in the folds of the kimonos areutterly sublime. Hand painted images of Samuraiwith their families, clad in beautiful silken kimonos and coiffures with tiny hairpins. Men, women, and children of all ages adorn all sides of the vase. The top is further decorated with precisely measured reserves where the intricate brocades and patterning would have been appliedthen gilt. It is fascinating to see this underlayment when one is familiar with fine Satsuma ware. This rare piece belongs in a museum or book. Measures approximately 2 5/8\" tall, and is inexcellent antique condition, must havebeen carefully stored by all of the fortunate owners for over 100 years. One of the finestvases that we have ever offered, certainly the most interesting.
