WWI PILOT SCRAPBOOK JOHN L. MOREHEAD OF NORTH CAROLINA:
$179.00

After a lifetime of collecting, I have amassed a large collection of thousands of items all dealing with aviation during WWI.
my collection includes books, airplane instruments, uniforms, wings, ephemera, etc. While some items may be rarer and more expensive than others, they all have a sense of history associated with each of them. I have always found WWI aviation to be a fascinating subject because of the new technology represented by the airplane and the progress made during the war, but even more importantly, I admire the personalities of the young men who were prepared to sacrifice everything for a cause they believed in. Unfortunately, my family does not share my interest, and it seems prudent to start to make these things available to others who will appreciate them.
This item is of historical significance. It is the gold embossed scrapbook of John Lindsay Morehead. Morehead came from one of the most politically prominent families of North Carolina. His grandfather, John Motley Morehead, was governor of North Carolina and his father, also John Motley Morehead, was a congressman. The city of Morehead, NC was named after the grandfather. This scrapbook traces Morehead\'s life from grammar school, through college, service in the US Air Service as a pilot during WWI, and his own later professional and political life. He was also a champion trap shooter. The book is approx. 16\" by 12\" and contains over 50 pages, all containing numerous photos, personal documents, newspaper articles, correspondence, etc.
With regard to his service in Aviation, there are photos of him in uniform, in and next to airplanes, is training field, etc. It contains his commission as a second lt. in the Air Service. There are documents and orders from Park Field, TN, Camp Dick, Dallas, TX and Souther Field, Americus, GA. There is an invitation to the thirteenth annual banquet of the Aero Club of America and the menu for Thanksgiving dinner at the Officer\'s Club of Souther Field on Nov. 28, 1918. There are also pages from his pilot\'s log.
This is one of a kind and won\'t be seen again. Contact me with any questions.
I will ship by the least costly method including insurance and tracking for items over $100, unless buyer requests otherwise. Wait until you hear from me at end of sale before making payment.
Please check out my other WWI aviation items. I will try to list new items each Sunday, so add me to your favorite sellers.
