Lionel started in 1900. By 1937 or so, they were bankrupt and came out with 8 pieces of curved track that made a 31 inch circle, and a wind up hand car with various Disney character combinations (the boxed set sold for a dollar) to plow their way out of that problem. Unfortunately, the figures were plaster, did not survive at a good rate, and now cost a fortune, so the remakes are splendid and cost effective.
