This early 1960's movie would not pass as rated G in 2007! My wife would not finish watching the movie since it made her quite furious. The inhumane treatment to the puppy (Nikki) and the cub bear in the beginning was disturbing to me too. For those of you that have not seen the movie, here's a few highlights. Nikki and a cub bear are tied together with a rope by their master. The canoe tips and these two are forced to survive for several days still attached to a 6 foot rope. By the way, they show these two fighting in a severe manner which looks (and is) quite real. On to my story. The cub tries to climb a small tree while Nikki is literally being hanged by the rope. Disturbing. The movie continues in this direction for about 15 minutes until the cub slips the rope from his neck. Nikki is also poisioned in the movie by an evil trapper. He survives..barely. The movie wraps up with a nasty gambling dog fight similar to the movie "White Fang". I do not recommend this movie for young children. I will most likely throw this movie in the trash than trying to resell it on Ebay or Half.comRead full review
This movie was most definitely NOT made under the supervision of ANY type of animal welfare group, considering the tremendous amount of abuse the animals, mostly Nikki, had to take. It was so disturbing to watch, I couldn't finish it. I didn't even get to the dog fighting scenes, because what transpired prior to that was enough to make me stop. Nikki is attacked by a bear cub (who is his "friend" in the movie), dumped out of a boat in rapids and practically drowned, hung by the neck from a rope, and attacked by a wolf! All that BEFORE they even got to the dog fighting! Disney should be ashamed that it EVER released such a movie, even if it was 4o+ years ago. Definitely NOT a FAMILY movie! And if you care about animals at all, especially dogs, believe me, you do NOT want to watch this movie. All I could say while watching it was OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!! My husband (kona6024 from above) is absolutly right...this one goes in the trash!Read full review
A rare Disney classic from the 60's! This gem is a Disney take on "Call of the Wild"; with all the heart-wrenching fun of Disney adventure. The scenes where Nikki and the bear are tied together are hilarious. A cautionary note here for our more over-cautious 21st century parents: this film is more intense than the average modern day formula Disney movie. It much more real life. Not necessarily politically correct, it may also offend animal activists, especially with the dog-fighting scenes. The movie is a real reflection of how life was in the northern gold country. Today, it would probably garner a PG rating. This movie is a must have for all animal and adventure loving buffs. "Nikki" is extremely entertaining. Great family entertainment. It holds the interest for the entire movie, no time for popcorn refills! This Disney gem is highly recommended!Read full review
