Titled “Proclamation January the First, Eighteen Hundred and Sixty Three. By the President of the United States of America.”

Presents the text of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Subtitled “Original Given to the Brooklyn Sanitary Fair, Feb. 22, 1864, and By a Subscription of $500 Bought of the Fair and Presented to Abraham Lincoln, President of the U.S.”

This is a VERY substantial and rare piece dating from 1864 that is of extraordinary quality. When sold in 1864 it was obviously intended for framing and prominent home display. It is the best Emancipation display piece that is actually period. Attributed also as possibly a campaign piece by Heritage, it is just a phenomenal Lincoln and Emancipation item. Obviously produced at great expense and extremely rare (probably because they were expensive when issued). I’ve only seen a couple examples (there may have been others but I’ve seen literally two) offered over the years. I bought them both and have decided I don’t need two.

Personally I think this piece should be worth multiples of the asking price. But it is so rare that no one is really familiar with the item. I got a great deal on this (in large part because it is so rare and virtually not documented). It is a duplicate so I am fine selling reasonably and even receptive to offers. But also Ok keeping. It is a great item. This piece has always struck me as a greater display value, greater rarity, more substantial, and more meaningful than many (if not all) Lincoln broadside and campaign items that are for the most part valued considerably higher. I think this piece is a “victim of its own rarity” and is a museum-caliber piece worthy of the most advanced collection. But it is so rare that most do not even know it exists.
