Please consider buyingthisitem for yourself or to give as a gift! If you have any questions please call or email us.SIZE: 8.75\'\' X 12\'\'.DESCRIPTION: Beginning in 1998,woodcutprints from Washington began appearing onand elsewhere; Washington claiming variously that the woodcuts were originals by famous artists, that they had beenmadeby a great-grandfather whom he identified as named “Earl Mack Washington” and as having lived from 1862 until 1952, or that this alleged great-grandfather hadrescuedthe associated blocks from a fire-bombedManhattanprint shop in the 1880s.E.M. Washington is an African American artist and reported his great-grandfather as such, which led to increased interest in the work. It was estimated by September 2004 that as many as 60,000 prints had been sold, at prices ranging from $20 to a $350.(Washington himself has since admitted to “creating over 1700 wood engravings”.)
Although this collection is the product of this art scam, the prints are most interesting in that history. The eagerness with which they were initially accepted speaks to the growing modern interest in the work of early African-American artists and artisans. Though we know now that they not what they seemed, these prints are still very good \"original\" copies of some very fine wood block prints, especially those of African-American figures and subjects. My own personal experience is that they actually are wood block prints, and thus have a limited number of copies available. I personally own one of his original wood blocks. They are a great collectable, with an interesting history.
CONDITION: Print is in Very Good Condition!
