Historic Photo Celebration of Emancipation Proclamation? Lincoln, Slavery Rare:
$19999.99

Large original albumen photo showing a crowd, including a band and the person of honor, a young African American man who is seated in a wheelbarrow.
According to Wikipedia, which referenced a February 2011 Newsweek article, this was a celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863... see the last two image in this listing for my source on this. The Newsweek article claimed that this was the Exchange Hotel in downtown Methuen, Massachusetts - the crowd, which includes a Union band, made a bet based on the result of Congress's vote, and the loser would have to wheel the young black man all the way to Lawrence, Massachusetts. That is according to Newsweek/Wiki. Another collector believes this scene was taken in November 1868, taken in Methuen, Massachusetts, showing an election bet that involved the loser wheeling an African American from Methuen to Lawrence. Because the only reference I could personally find is the Wiki/Newsweek one, that is the title I chose for this listing.
The dimensions of the entire piece, including the mat, are 16.5" x 13.5" which is too large to fit on my scanner, so I took one off cell phone pics which I uploaded directly from my phone, completely unedited.
Very good antique condition, with some minor issues, slightly light, light foxing... any issues should be apparent in my photos, but let me know if you have any questions. The albumen is affixed to the mount and the original paper mat goes over the top, but as you can see, is detached. No doubt at one time it was framed behind glass...
Very well boxed & insured PRIORITY EXPRESS MAIL (U.S. Only, overnight to most U.S. ZIP codes).
