EARLY SEVRES SOFT PASTE PORCELAIN BOX 18th CENTURY 1759 1760 DATE LETTER G
I am offering a beautiful and early Sevres soft-paste porcelain box made in 1759 - 1760.King Louis XV of France was an investor in the the porcelain works in Vincennes (1740 - 1756).The porcelain works moved to Sevres in 1756, where it has remained till the present. He purchased the Sevres factory outright in 1759 when it was threatened with bankruptcy.Louis XV's mistress, Madame Pompadour, was the director of the porcelain works at this time. The box is decorated with anover-all rhomboid lattice-work of cross-banded gilt and enameled leaves insetwith small enameled flowers, likelyin imitation of an embroidered silk textile.Lattice-work patterns are typical motifs during this period of late Vincennes and early Sevres porcelain.Analogous examples may be found in books and online. The matte gold gilding is thick and modeled in relief. The box has a slightly irregular oval shape due to its beingslab-built, not mold-cast, porcelain. The original metal lid-frame and baseare both missing.Presumably they were scrapped during some war or revolution. The box would have been purchased originally without metal fittings.Guild laws of the time required any metal fittings to be made only by a dedicated metal-smith.Wear marks to the enamelmay be seen at the edges where the lid-frame and base were formerly mounted (please see photos). The base is marked in blue with the interlocked "L"'s of the Sevres worksand the date-letter "G" for the years circa 1759 - 1760.The body of the box measures 5-9/16 x 3-7/8 x 2-1/8 inches. The lid measures 5-3/4 x 4-1/8 inches. The box with lid is 2-7/8 inches high. The box is in very good condition with only minor wear to the enamel from the original metal fittings. It has no chips, cracks or repairs.
Free shipping with USPS Priority Mail within the United States. The item will be double-boxed for shipping.I will insure the package at my own cost.I will ship International.
I will consider serious offers.
