The name Guanyin means "She who harkens to the cries of the world." In this Ming-style bronze, Bodhisattva Guanyin wears a large crown adorned with an intricate miniature figure of the Amitabha Buddha, of whom the Goddess of Compassion is an emanation. Guanyin stands upon an elaborate two-tiered lotus throne. In her six hands, she holds a loop and a lotus flower; below these are a thunderbolt, a bow and arrow, and a nectar vase in her lower left hand. Her lower right hand displays the Varada charity mudra. The hands in front are in the Namaskar and Vitarka teaching mudras. The aureole of arms and attributes symbolizes the protection and guidance of sentient beings. The heavy, solid bronze, original cast statue has a gorgeous, deep umber patina, highlighted with bronze russet and verdigris malachite formed over the ages by handling and exposure. A rectangular reserve on the reverse: Great Ming Xuande Year Apparatus (大明宣德年施). This inscription is regarded as an homage to the early 15th-century Ming style rather than a chronological marker. The bronze statue is conservatively dated to the 19th-century Qing Era.
