Koshirae: Imperial Japanese Navy Officer's Sword from the Early Showa Period This design is a modern adaptation of the traditional Japanese “tachi” sword, and the naval version is characterized by its particularly elaborate ornamentation.
It features “togidashi same-gawa”—a technique in which multiple layers of shark skin are wrapped around the blade, hardened with lacquer, and then polished to a high gloss. The scabbard is fitted with two rings called “haikan” for hanging.
