The King orders the administrator of the Order of Sir Saint Santiago, Don Fernando Ruiz de Contreras, to accept as a member to Don Tomas de Silva y Sotomayor, who was a huge devotee of the apostle.
Document Signed: "Yo, El Rey", "Geronimo de Lecama", "Count of Oñate", "Francisco de Quevedo" and "Gregorio de Tapia" in iron gall ink. 16¾x12. Two pages. Fully Translated in English: "Don Felipe, for the grace of God King of Castile, of Leon, of Aragon, of the two Sicilies, of Jerusalem, of Portugal, of Navarra, of Granada, of Toledo, of Valencia, of Galicia, of Mallorcas, of Seville, of Sardinia, of Cordoba, of Corcega, of Murcia, of Jaen, of Algares, of Gibraltar, of the Canary Islands, of the Eastern and Western and mainland, of the sea, Archduke of Austria, Duke of Borgona, of Bravant and Milan, Count of Aizpuru, of Flanders, and of Barcelona, Sir of Biscay and of Molina, perpetual administrator of the Order and Cavalry of Santiago, with apostolic authority, to you, Don Fernando Ruiz de Contreras ][illegible] of the same Order of my Council of the Indias, and my lord in the war, and to any other professed assembly of the Order, and to live in the observation, rules and discipline of it for the devotion he has to the blessed Apostle Santiago. He is begging me to order his admission and give him the saint and insignia of the Order, and I, observing his devotion and the services that has done to me and to the Order itself, which I hope he continues doing, have favored him in Madrid with a real mandate the last October 9, and I granted him with the robe of the Order. So, as long as Don Tomas de Silba y Sotomayor obeys the rules of the Order he must remain as a member of it. So, I give the authority and power to you, as the administrator, to arm him and celebrate his entrance with the other members of the Order in my name. That is what I order you Pedro Marquez de Gaceta, and I order Don Tomas de Silva y Sotomayor to send to my Council in four months the proof to have been admitted to the Order and the details of it. He also must live in the galleries for six months and after that time go to the convent where he must learn the rule of the Order and the roughness, ceremonies and all the other things that as a knight he must know, and the principal of the convent must welcome him and obey my orders. I issue this letter and signed it and sealed with the seal of the Order, and it is except from the media anata tax. November 6, 1641. I, The King. I, Geronimo de Lecama, secretary of Our King/ I certify that in the parish of Saint Santiago in this villa of Madrid on November 7, 1641, Mr. Fernando Ruiz de Contreras obeying the mandate of Your Majesty, I armed as knight of the order of Santiago to Don Tomas de Silba and gave him the robe of it [illegible] religious of the same Order and Chaplain of Your Majesty, and I sign this document to probe I have fulfilled with the mandate. Francisco de Quevedo. Title of robe of Cavalry of the Order of Santiago, favored by His Majesty to Don Thomas de Silva y Sotomayor on October 9, 1641. The Count of Oñate, Francisco de Quevedo, Gregorio de Tapia".
PHILIP IV of Spain (1605-1665) ruled from 1621 over a Spanish empire that was at the height of its territorial expansion but beginning its economic and military decline. A pious king who also lavishly supported the arts, Philip enjoyed some foreign policy successes early in his reign but was increasingly hard pressed to raise funds for Spain's many wars, including the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). The king had many children by his two wives and one mistress but did not father a surviving male heir until 1661.
Geronimo de Lecama served as secretary of King Philip IV. Íñigo Vélez de Guevara y Tassis (1566-1644) was born in Madrid to Pedro Velez de Guevara and Maria de Tassis. He was the seven Count of Oñate and Count of Villamediana. Guevara y Tassis married Catalina Velez, fifth Countess of Oñate, and when her only brother Ladron was killed in battle on sea against the English in 1588, he became seventh Count of Oñate. After the death of his cousin Juan de Tassis y Peralta, 2nd Count of Villamediana, he also inherited the title of Count of Villamediana. Íñigo Vélez also served as ambassador of Spain to the Holy See.
Francisco de Quevedo was a friar who belonged to the Order of Sir Saint Santiago. Gregorio de Tapia was a chancellor who belonged to the Order of Sir Saint Santiago.
