Offered here are a rare and highly desirable pair of museum quality bookends. Both bookends are marked for the sculptor Bruno Zach. Several other booking manufacturers made a knock off set of this, including Jennings Brothers. These bookends are marked Austrian Bronze, Zach, and both also have B. Altman Co. included with the shop mark.
The photos are an important part of this description. The last three photos are of a similar pair of Bruno Zack Austrian bronze book ends with the same patina. Both sets are outstanding.
Zach emigrated toAustriaas a young man and studied at theVienna Academyunder sculptorsHans Bitterlich(1860–1949) andJosef Müllner(1879–1968).His styles included Art Deco,Art Nouveau, sporting, andorientalism.
Enter B. Altman Co.: The store that would become B. Altman and Company began on Manhattan'sLower East Sideas a family-owned store, which by 1865 had come to be solely owned byBenjamin Altman, one of the brothers in the family. Altman was a prolific collector of art. As a collector of bookends by Griffoul Foundry I can verify that Grffoul bookends were sold by B. Altman Co. until Griffoul ceased casting decorative art in 1916 when its focus shifted completely to manufacturing goods for the Great War effortWhen Benjamin Altman died in 1913 at the age of 73, his stock in the stores was placed into the Altman Foundation. Altman's art collection, which included manyRembrandts, went to New York City'sMetropolitan Museum of Art. I am assuming that Bruno Zach's Austrian Bronzes probably overlapped with the woks produced by New Jersey based Griffoul Foundry. Hence my speculation that these may have been produced pre-1917

The craftsmanship and condition of these bookends is excellent. The well-known onyx bases have some age appropriate wear.
The bookends are 7 inches tall and 4 1/4 inches wide. The pair weigh 9 lbs. 9 oz.
