Offered here are a rare and highly desirable pair ofmuseum qualitybookends. Both bookends are marked for the sculptor Bruno Zach. But I have not found any information as to what the subject matter is. These bookends are marked Austrian Bronze and Zach. They are of identical construction to another Zach pair of bookends I have listed are also shop marked B Altman Co.

Zach emigrated toAustriaas a young man and studied at theVienna Academyunder sculptorsHans Bitterlich(1860–1949) andJosef Müllner(1879–1968).His styles included Art Deco,Art Nouveau, sporting, andorientalism.
Enter B. Altman Co.: The store that would become B. Altman and Company began on Manhattan'sLower East Sideas a family-owned store, which by 1865 had come to be solely owned byBenjamin Altman, one of the brothers in the family. Altman was a prolific collector of art. As a collector of bookends by Griffoul Foundry I can verify that Grffoul bookends were sold by B. Altman Co/ until Griffoul ceased casting decorative art in 1916 when its focus shifted completely to manufacturing goods for the Great War effortWhen Benjamin Altman died in 1913 at the age of 73, his stock in the stores was placed into the Altman Foundation. Altman's art collection, which included manyRembrandts, went to New York City'sMetropolitan Museum of Art. I am assuming that Bruno Zach's Austrian Bronzes probably overlapped with the woks produced by New Jersey based Griffoul Foundry. Hence my speculation that these may have been produced pre-1917
Condition is excellent.
The book ends are 7 inches tall, and 4 3/8 inches deep. The pair weigh 8 lbs. 9 oz..
