This is an authentic, original commercial sign from Lahaina Scrimshaw, one of Maui’s best-known maritime art and scrimshaw galleries. The shop operated for decades and was a destination for visitors interested in nautical art, whaling history, and traditional scrimshaw. I worked there 20+ years ago and purchased the sign when the owner retired. The other location was in Front Street Lahaina which burned in the devastating 2023 fires. Not much exists of the scrimshaw history.

The sign dates to the early years of Whalers Village, which opened in 1970, and is consistent in construction, typography, materials, and hanging method with early–mid 1970s Hawaiian commercial signage.

Historic photographs (included for provenance) show this exact sign hanging outside the Lahaina Scrimshaw storefront at the Whalers Village location, confirming its original exterior use and authenticity.

The Whalers Village location has since closed permanently, making surviving original signage from the shop increasingly rare.
