Historic Civil War Union Flag Raised During the Occupation of Richmond – April 3, 1865An American Civil War Flag Bearing a Period Richmond Occupation InscriptionOffered is an original American Civil War United States 36-star Flag bearing the long-preserved handwritten inscription:“This Flag was raised over the city of Richmond, Va., April 3, 1865, the day of occupation by Union Soldiers.”The Flag also bears the period stencil:“J. H. Jones Pvt.”April 3, 1865 marked one of the defining moments of the American Civil War, when Union forces entered Richmond, Virginia, following the evacuation of the city. The inscription associates this Flag with the Union occupation of Richmond on April 3, 1865, one of the defining events of the closing days of the war.Throughout my stewardship, I have devoted substantial time to researching the Flag, its inscription, and its historical context. My research has included official military records, regimental histories, pension files, archival newspapers, cemetery records, Library of Congress materials, National Park Service resources, period maps, and numerous additional historical references.Rather than focusing solely on identifying the individual named on the stencil, my research has sought to understand the Flag within the broader historical events surrounding the Richmond Campaign, the Petersburg Campaign, the evacuation and occupation of Richmond, and the final Appomattox Campaign, during which Union forces—including elements of the Army of the James—entered Richmond on April 3, 1865.The inscription and stencil are presented exactly as they appear on the Flag.Research into the complete wartime provenance of the Flag remains ongoing, and additional discoveries may yet be made. The accompanying documentation provides a substantial foundation for future historical investigation while allowing the next steward to continue the research if desired. This listing does not represent the Flag as the De Peyster Capitol Flag or as any other specifically documented Richmond presentation Flag. Rather, it is offered as an original American Civil War 36-star United States Flag bearing a period inscription identifying it with one of the most significant moments in American history, together with an extensive archive of supporting historical research assembled during my ownership.⸻Prior Catalog HistoryDuring its ownership history, this Flag was previously cataloged and sold by respected historical dealer Seth Kaller, Inc. under the title:“Union Flag Flown over Richmond on the Day of Union Occupation.”A copy of the archived catalog page forms part of the accompanying research archive and is available to qualified prospective purchasers.⸻Included* Original American Civil War 36-star United States Flag
