H. Jones Pvt.”April 3, 1865 marked one of the defining moments of the American Civil War, when Union forces entered Richmond, Virginia, following the evacuation of the city. The inscription associates this Flag with the Union occupation of Richmond on April 3, 1865, one of the defining events of the closing days of the war.Throughout my stewardship, I have devoted substantial time to researching the Flag, its inscription, and its historical context.
