Title1970s Hong Kong Causeway Bay Night View Daimaru Neon Rolex Skyline China 234 Postcard
Front DescriptionA colour night-view photograph of Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island, set against a dramatic orange-and-red sunset sky streaked with cloud, with the dark silhouette of the Kowloon hills across Victoria Harbour on the horizon. In the mid-ground, a cluster of illuminated mid- and high-rise apartment and commercial blocks glows with lit windows, their rooftops crowned by bright neon advertising signs. The most prominent is the large white circular Daimaru logo with the illuminated "DAIMARU" name and Chinese characters 大丸, marking the Japanese department store that anchored the district. Numerous other neon signs light up the foreground streets, including well-known brands such as ROLEX, DOXA, LONGINES, ORIS, PHILIPS, Coca-Cola and Asahi Beer, in glowing red, white, green and blue. Beyond the built-up shoreline the harbour is dark, dotted with the faint lights of ships and reflections. The saturated colour, neon detail and high-rise density are characteristic of a late-1960s to 1970s photochrome tourist postcard.

Estimated EraApproximately 1968–1975. The subject is Causeway Bay by night, dominated by the Daimaru department store's neon sign; Daimaru opened in Causeway Bay in 1960 and the surrounding high-rise density shown here points to the later 1960s or early 1970s. The array of watch and consumer-brand neon (Rolex, Longines, Doxa, Oris, Philips) is consistent with that period. The continuous-tone photochrome printing, white border, green divided back with added Japanese caption, "Place Stamp Here" box, and the identical publisher (Paul Photographic Co., Mongkok) and printer (Cheong Hing Printing Co.) match the companion cards; the higher card number 234 and taller skyline suggest a slightly later printing than the daytime cards in the series, around the turn of the 1970s.
