Penciled on the inside of the front cover is "O.W. Norton 1911" - Oliver Wilcox Norton served in the 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry and later as a brigade bugler. Credited with being one of the creators the famous bugle call "Taps" and author of his detailed, published letters, "Army Letters, 1861-1865, and his role in documenting the Civil War.
