Napoleonic French First Empire Shako Plate

“2 DE LA SEINE” – c.1806–1815

Arare and highly attractive shako platefrom theFrench First Empire, dating to the Napoleonic periodc.1806–1815, and attributed to the2nd Department, De La Seine, encompassing Paris and its immediate surroundings.

The plate is struck in brass and displays theimperial crowned eagle, emblematic of Napoleonic authority, set above a crescent-form base flanked by stylisedlions’ heads. At centre is a shield inscribed“2 DE LA SEINE”, encircled by alaurel wreath, a classical symbol of victory and imperial glory widely used during the Empire.

This pattern of plate is associated withdepartmental formations, including elements of theNational Guard and locally raised infantry units, rather than standard line regiments. Plates of this type are encountered far less frequently than those of line infantry, particularly with clear departmental designation.
