The King of Spain signs the court summoning of Joseph Pellicer
Document signed: "yo El Rey F" in black ink. 1 page, 12x8¼. Madrid, Spain. January 28, 1940. Written in Latin, roughly translated: The King Philip IV summons Josepho Pellicer de Orau and Tobar to Court. . Philip IV of Spain (1605-1665) ruled from 1621 over a Spanish empire at the height of its territorial expansion but beginning its economic and military decline. A pious king who also lavishly supported the arts, Philip enjoyed some foreign policy successes early in his reign, but was increasingly hard pressed to raise funds for Spain's many wars, including the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). The king had many children by his two wives and one mistress, but did not father a surviving male heir until 1661. Lightly stained, soiled and creased. Folds, vertical fold touches "R" in Rey. Slightly smudged signature. Nicked edges with minor paper loss and minor tears.
