Historical Notes

The Doors formed in Los Angeles in 1965 and rose to fame with their 1967 debut album, producing the #1 hit 'Light My Fire.' Jim Morrison - poet, provocateur, and one of rock's most mythologized figures - died in Paris on July 3, 1971, at the age of 27, joining the so-called '27 Club.' The remaining members - Manzarek, Krieger, and Densmore - briefly continued before dissolving the band in 1973.

Manzarek and Krieger later toured as 'The Doors of the 21st Century' (later 'Riders on the Storm'), while Densmore famously refused to join and successfully litigated to protect the Doors name. Ray Manzarek passed away on May 20, 2013, leaving Krieger and Densmore as the surviving members. The Doors were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, and Morrison's grave at Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris remains one of the most visited in the world.

Print analysis

This is a color photographic print on what appears to be standard photo paper. The color saturation, fading characteristics, and overall tonality are consistent with a chromogenic (C-print) color photograph produced in the late 1960s or early 1970s. The handwritten notation 'original' on the back supports a contemporaneous print. The lack of any publisher stamp, wire service stamp, or agency mark is consistent with a privately held or promotional photograph rather than a press photo. This is assessed as a Type 1 or early Type 2 original color photo, most likely printed within a few years of being taken, circa 1967-1969.
