Just days after he received the Republican Vice Presidential nomination, Governor Coolidge appoints a Chairman for Massachusetts' war memorial commission.
Civil Appointment signed: "Calvin Coolidge" as Governor, "Albert P. Langtry" as Secretary of the Commonwealth, 12x19, Boston, 1920 June 16. Appointment of J. Payson Bradley of Boston as a member, and Chairman, of the commission to establish a memorial to soldiers and sailors from Massachusetts who served their country in time of war. After losing an election for School Committee in 1905, CALVIN COOLIDGE (1872-1933, born in Plymouth, Vermont) never lost another one. He was Mayor of Northampton, Massachusetts (1910-1911), State Senator (1912-1915), Lieutenant Governor (1916-1918), Governor (1919-1920), vice president (1921-1923) and president (1923-1929). He earned a national following during the Boston Police Strike of 1919, when as Governor he declared, "There is no right to strike against the public safety by anyone, anywhere, any time." "Silent Cal," as he was called for his economy of speech, succeeded to the Presidency upon the death of Warren Harding and won election to his own full term in 1924. Despite his taciturn manner, Coolidge gave more press conferences than any President before or since, and was the first to deliver a political speech on radio. ALBERT PERKINS LANGTRY (1860-1939), a newspaper editor, served as Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1911-1913 and again 1915-1921. The Republican, who also served a term in the state legislature, was defeated for re-election in 1913 but returned to office two years later. The Massachusetts Veterans War Memorial Tower, built in 1932, sits atop Mount Greylock, the highest point in the Bay State. One horizontal fold and two vertical folds. Lightly creased.
