VERY RARE LARGE San Francisco 1937 Golden Gate Bridge Fiesta Days Opening Banner:

For sale is this exceedingly rare piece which appears to be deaccessed from the City of San Francisco archives (see last photo - not confirmed but catalog number and city hall reference consistent with archival methods).

It is 8’ long (approximately) X 3’ high (at middle, approximate) banner or bunting segment celebrating Fiesta Days at the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge from May 27 - June 2, 1937. I do not have a specific reference to where these were hung (at 8’ long it would have been somewhere substantial - a pair of smaller signs for light posts from Sacramento for the event were appraised on Antiques Roadshow in 2019 for $1000) but it was almost certainly San Francisco given the size - possibly at city hall - although it says “welcome” which would indicate at the bridge itself as a strong possibility - a pretty through search has not found another like this example.

It appears to be composed from a synthetic fabric but I could be wrong. No major damage - grommets well attached, complete fringe - no separating at stitching. Minor staining and fading but my guess is this was hung outside so that is to be expected - not awful - see photos.

If you are a Golden Gate Bridge or San Francisco history collector this is probably a one of one chance. Take a look and decide for yourself.
