This unique sterling set was presented by the West Point Class of 1915 to the U.S.M.A. on July 19, 1917. "THE CLASS THE STARS FELL ON" was an expression used to describe the Class of 1915 at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY. In the United States Army, the insignia reserved for generals is one or more stars. Of the 164 graduates that year, 59 attained the rank of General, more than any other class in the history of the Academy. Two graduates reached the rank of five start General of the Army, two were four star Generals, seven three star Lieutenant Generals, 24 two star Major Generals and 24 one star Brigadier Generals. Dwight D. Eisenhower, one of the five star Generals, went on to become the 34th President of the United States. The other, Omar Bradley, became the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, under Presidents Harry S. Truman and Eisenhower.
The sterling plate has a small ding on the front left side. There are a few minor scratches on the back of the plate. The back is marked "THE BAILEY, BANKS & offerDLE COMPANY" "925/1000" and "STERLING" and "S.7736". The plate measures 11" across. The other dark spots shown in the pictures are just shadows. The large pot is 9" tall and is marked "STERLING - BAILEY, BANKS & offerDLE CO.", S.7736 and 1-1/4 PTS". The large pot has monogrammed initials under the insignia. It appears to be "ALW-JVR". See pictures for exact details. The cup measures 2-1/2" tall and is marked "STERLING - BAILEY, BANKS & offerDLE CO. and S.7736". The cup also has a slight ding on the back but does not detract from the overall look of the cup. The creamer is 4-1/2" tall and has the same markings as the cup. See pictures for exact details.
