THIS ITEM IS PART OF COLLECTION OF AFRICAN TRIBAL ART PURCHASED BY MY late SISTER IN THE 1960s in NYCity

It was a vintage item when it was purchased in the late-1960s, and was estimated as being no less than 30 to 40 years old at that time. This indicates it dates from the1920s - 1930s (or earlier) - making it at least 90 years old at this time.

I was told by a Yale University Museum African specialist that this appears to be part of a Nigerian Gelede Society dance costume, representing the torso of a naked pregnant woman. The abdomen shows a carved ritual scarification pattern.

Gelede dancers are charged with the responsibility of placating witches and sorcerers so that they bring no harm to the people.

\"Gelede\" is a society exclusively for men. In the Southwest of Nigeria they used

tosend their masks to all the nearby villages in order to increasefertility and

torepel harm. In some areas, men begging for fertility of their women are

disguisedlike transvestites, wearing body masks ofa pregnant woman together

with aGelede helmet masks
