60 gelatin dry glass platesnegativestaken circa 1880’s. The negatives show images of India taken by the famed photographersSamuel Bourne (1834-1912)andCharles Shepherd (fl. 1858-1878).

These glass platesare probably theoldest contemporary glass plates negatives in existencesince Bourne & Shepherd original glass plates were destroyed by a fire in are apparentlypirated copies taken circa 1880’sfrom original prints most likely by an amateur for small scale reprinting.

Physicaldescription:Sizeabout 9 x 12 cm (3 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches).In good general conditiondespite some imperfections and small scratches affecting the images, in some cases there are larger losses of the photographic solution around the edges usually not affecting the image, glasses without cracking, all numbered by hand (usually twice) at the corners outside the image area.
