Typed Letter Signed: "Ch. Weizmann", 1 page, 4¾x6¼. Oakwood, 16. Addison Crescent, 1933 January 6. On imprinted letterhead to Monsieur Aron G. Hermoni, Paris. In full: "Thank you for your long letter of the 28th December. I should have written before, but I have been laid up for a few days with 'flu. I need not tell you how sorry I am to hear of your difficulties. I do not at the moment know of any suitable post which is vacant, either in France, or here, or in Palestine, but I shall keep my eyes open, and if I hear of anything I will surely let you know at once. With my sincere good wishes for the New Year, and best regards, I am Yours very sincerely". Handwritten postscript, initialed: "Ch. W." In French, translated. In full: "I will be in Paris toward the end of next week." Chemist and statesman Dr. Chaim Weizmann (1874-1952) wrote this letter during a pivotal period of Jewish history - halfway between the Balfour Declaration (1917) and the founding of the State of Israel (May 14, 1948). At the time of this letter, Weizmann was temporarily divested of the presidency of the World Zionist Organization and Jewish Agency. He had served as its President since 1920, but was not re-elected at the 17th Zionist Congress (July 1931). Weizmann remained, however, as Zionism's most recognized spokesman and the President of the English Zionist Federation. The Balfour Declaration stemmed from Weizmann's persuasion of British Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour to submit a letter favoring a national Jewish home in Palestine. At that time, Weizmann was doing scientific work in Great Britain, where his process for manufacturing acetone by maize fermentation was being utilized during WWI. On January 30, 1933, 25 days after Weizmann wrote this letter, Adolph Hitler became Chancellor of Germany. For German Jews, it was the beginning of a time of persecution. Weizmann took the lead to save German Jews and their property from the Nazis. By 1935, 62,000 Jews were issued permits to immigrate to Palestine, and Weizmann was reinstated as President of the World Zionist Organization, an office he held until 1946. In 1934, Weizmann founded the Daniel Sieff Research Institute in Palestine for agricultural and industrial study. Weizmann himself hoped to spend time there working on theoretical and scientific problems. He was unable to expend much of his time with these studies, however, due to his devoted efforts for his people, especially in Germany during WWII and later in Israel. In 1947, Weizmann traveled to the U.S. for a meeting with the United Nations Special Commission on Palestine. There, he testified as a private individual before the Commission. Early in 1948, even though not in an official Zionist office, he met with U.S. President Harry Truman to ensure that America would drop its trusteeship of Palestine. Weizmann also procured a loan from the U.S. for $100,000,000 for the Jewish national home, which became a reality on May 14, 1948. Weizmann became the first President of the Provisional State Council and in February of 1949, he was elected President of the State of Israel. Slightly creased with folds, not at signature. Frame lightly chipped. Otherwise, fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 29¾ x 20½.
