Thisis not a reproduction. This is not a decorative piece. This is a survivingartifact of American circus history — a hand-carved Outside Row Jumper createdby master carver Charles Looff in the 1890s, built expressly for the RinglingBrothers Circus carousel in the iconic Coney Island tradition.

If you know Looff's work, you already know what this is. If you're newto carousel art: Charles Looff carved the first Coney Island carousel in 1876and is widely considered the founding father of the American carousel. Very fewpieces of his survive outside of museums. This is one of them.

The CarvingLooffwas the undisputed master of carousel artistry, and this horse is proof of why.The mane flows in dramatic, deeply undercut waves. Eleven jewels are set intothe ornate trappings. Twin imps flank the saddle. Every surface tells a story, this is sculpture, not craft.The Condition
