As President of Israel in 1949, he signs a typed letter welcoming new settlers.
TLS: "Chaim Weizmann" in Hebrew as President of Israel, 1 page, 6½x9. (Jerusalem), 1949 August 1. To The Association of Chassidey Chabad, in the Holy-Land, Kfar Chabad. Begins: "New Settlers". In full: "Blessed be this new stage on your way, men of Wisdom Understanding and Knowledge, may the blood of the martyrs of Hebron be avenged - faithful adherence of the "Tanya". May you succeed in your new Hebrew life at (Kfar Seporia) Kfar Chabad. Good luck to you." The first initials of the Hebrew words for Wisdom ("Chochma"), Understanding ("Binah") and Knowledge ("Da'at") form the acronym "Chabad". The 800 Jews living in Hebron lived peacefully with the tens of thousands of their Arab neighbors until August 23, 1929, when Hebron turned into a city of terror and murder. By the time the massacres ended three days later, 67 Jews were dead and the survivors were relocated to Jerusalem. Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi (1745-1813) was the founder of Chabad Lubavitch. In his book, the Tanya, he outlined the Chabad philosophy. First published in 1796, Tanya is the "bible" of Chabad Chassidism, upon which hundreds of books are based. Kfar Chabad still flourishes as the Lubavitch base in Israel. It is a small settlement in the shadow of Ben Gurion International Airport. CHAIM WEIZMANN (1874-1952) was President of the World Zionist Organization (1920-1930, 1935-1946), Provisional President (1948-1949) and the 1st President of Israel from 1949 until his death on November 9, 1952. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. ¼-inch separation at upper blank edge at mid-vertical fold. Slightly soiled. Red pencil note (unknown hand) at lower right margin. 2 file holes at blank right edge. Overall, fine condition.
