Gojong (Korean: 고종; Hanja: 高宗; 8 September 1852[d] – 21 January 1919), personal name Yi Jaehwang, later changed to Yi Hui, also known as the Gwangmu Emperor, was the penultimate Korean monarch. He ruled Korea for 43 years, from 1864 until his forced abdication in 1907, initially as the 26th king of Joseon, and then as the first emperor of the Korean Empire. His wife, Queen Min (commonly known as Empress Myeongseong), played an active role in politics until her assassination carried out by the Japanese.

Suzuki Shin'ichi I

Suzuki was born as the third son of a family named Takahashi) in Iwashina (岩科村) (now Matsuzaki, Shizuoka) in July 1835. Both his parents died when he was young, and in 1854 he married into the Suzuki family (by the custom known as muko-iri [婿入り]) in Shimoda when he married Suzuki Yoshichi's daughter, working in the family aramonobusiness.

The same year as his marriage, a major tsunami (resulting from one of the Ansei great earthquakes) destroyed the building and ended the business.

At first working in sericulture, Suzuki often traveled to Yokohama, where he soon apprenticed at the Yokohama photographic studio of Shimooka Renjō in 1867.
