A 10x8" vintage photo from the Marty Himes estate.
Provenance: This photograph comes directly from the Marty Himes Racing Museum Collection, assembled over decades by Marty Himes - racer, restorer, and lifelong archivist of American racing. Every piece he preserved tells part of the story of motorsport’s rise from dirt tracks to the spectacle of the Indy 500. We acquired the majority of his photo collection after his passing. Many of his photos are extremely rare or even one of a kind. Professionally packaged in a rigid mailer for safe delivery.
Photo Overview
Frank Lockhart poses in the cockpit of his #15 Miller Special after winning the 14th running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indiana, 1926. Surrounded by mechanics, officials, and crewmen on the pit lane bricks, the rookie victor sits confidently in the sleek front-drive Miller while the grandstand bunting behind him signals race-day celebration.
Lockhart’s 1926 triumph remains legendary: the California up-and-comer started 20th, sliced through the field, and led 95 laps to become the first rookie winner since 1911. He went on to set numerous speed records before his untimely death in a 1928 land-speed attempt. Own this evocative image from the dawn of American open-wheel dominance and add an irreplaceable piece of Indy 500 history to your collection today—opportunities like this disappear fast.

Print analysis: Official IMS back-stamp with no press crop marks suggests an Indianapolis Motor Speedway archive print made from the original negative for historians and collectors, likely produced c1950s-60s. Therefore this is a Type 2 photograph: printed from the original 1926 negative more than three years after exposure but still a darkroom photo, not a later halftone or digital copy.
Condition: Please see scans of the image we have provided for the most accurate and complete state of the photo. Many of the photos in this collection are very old and have age related wear, chips, creases, curling, etc. Others are remarkably well maintained.
